Have you heard the saying: ‘If you love something, set it free. If it returns, it was always yours.’? Then the 90’s fashion must be really ours, because it came back to us, and it’s cooler than ever. That is just the ‘cycle of fashion’, so we might as well just embrace it already.
WHAT DOES 90S FASHION LOOK LIKE?
Well, it can be many things. Since style changes through the years. After all, the 90s is an entire decade. And if you think of some of the TV shows aired in that decade, we could be talking about a broad variety. Anything from: the form-fitting styles in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, casual business outfits from ‘Will and grace’ and a more Modern Preppy style as the one in 'Saved by the Bell' and 'Clueless?
In fact, the style that we are addressing is a combination of the Grunge, Punk and Hip-hop style. When we say ‘Grunge-style ‘ think of bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Sound Garden. When we say ‘punk style’ think of bands like Green Day, Blink-182, and Sum 41. And we talk about ‘Hip-hop style’ we mean like MC Hammer, Tupac, N.W.A., and Public Enemy.
Our 90s fashion outfits belong to a 'too cool to care' style, with a rebellion element, cool but indifferent. Although originally, these styles had a lack of concern for their appearance and may look irresponsible, lazy, and apathetic. Nowadays they look kind of edgy very fashionable.
We chose some essential elements to achieve the 90s vibe, a peculiar mixture between a tomboy approach and a trendy feminine style. An equilibrium between following fashion’s rules and being ‘too cool to care’. Something that says. ‘Yeah I had Barbies.. but only because my Ninja Turtles needed some hoes. ‘
MUST-HAVES IN 90s FASHION GRUNGE
Crop tops are definitely a must-have to achieve a 90's look. Along with baggy t-shirts, crop tops are one of the most representative items. Since many of the bottoms are baggy, wearing a crop top will help you to achieve a stylish look.
Get creative with overalls. You can wear anything or nothing underneath. You can wear a sweater early in the beginning of the day, and take it off later showing your sports bra.
Wearing heavy-duty combat boots practically with everything is a MUST. Pair them with slip dresses, florals, flannel shirts, and frayed jeans. The combinations are practically infinite. Don't be afraid to experiment.
LAYERED SLIP DRESS.
A slip dress can become one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. Pair them with a shirt underneath and perhaps a belt and, why not?: some sneakers.
Wear a dad hat to exude ultimate coolness, as usual.
HOODIES AND SWEATSHIRTS.
These belong to the hip-hop style which has: loose silhouettes, casual fabrics, and sport details. Bomber jackets, hoodies, and sweatshirts are great pieces to achieve an outfit that is easy to move around and still fashionable.
PLAID PANTS + DENIM JACKET
Nothing says retro more than plaid pants. Pair them with a denim jacket to achieve an ultimate retro outfit.
The slightly oversized, masculine-inspired leather jacket is back in all its nostalgic glory. Well, those ones I’m not actually sure that they ever went out of style. It’s always a good idea to wear them.
PLAID FLANNEL SHIRTS
I don’t think that there is anything more grunge that a plaid flannel shirt. Even if it is too warm to wear them, just place them around your waist. This 'borrowed from the boys' fashion statement is both powerful and empowering.
WIDE-LEGGED JEANS DESIGN AND RIPPED JEANS.
There is a wide variety of that enter into that category: flared, culotte, tapered, palazzo, cropped, mommy jeans, and one of my favorites: slouchy jeans. I don’t know what it is about them but they are so daring and can be fashionable at the same time.
If you want to achieve a stylish look there are two basic rules. The first one: if it's needed, wear a belt that brings out your hips.
The second rule is: show some ankles. Whether your jeans have elastic bands on your ankles or you decide to cuff them, that gives them a chic detail.
Once you follow those two rules, then you can wear them with basically anything: a loose shirt for an ultimate tomboy style, or fitted crop top for a more feminine style.
BIRKENSTOCKS AND SLIDERS
Probably the easiest way to styling Birkenstocks is with ripped denim jeans and a white loose crop top, everyone should have those two in their closets.
You can also wear sliders. They have been progressively more present in street outfits, probably an ‘ugly-chic’ trend that we will keep seeing since they are kind of comfy.
Part of the 90’s hip-hop heritage are wide-legged jeans, bomber jackets, gold chains, snapback hats. Then, there's sport wear.
Particularly tracksuits. Said to be first introduced by Adidas in 1964, these lightweight, matching jacket and pant sets quickly became synonymous with active lifestyles. Even if you decide to wear just the bottoms, it will look very retro.
Also, wearing a sports bra under bomber jackets, and overalls can help you look to achieve a vintage 90s outfit perfectly.
Baggy tees can look easily overlooked and considered as non-stylish pieces when the fact is they can be stylish.
Actually, there’s a non-sloppy way to wear them: You can tuck them to achieve a form-fitting outfit, or even use a belt to simulate a summer dress.
STATEMENT JEWELRY AND HAIRSTYLES.
Messy hairstyles are the epitome of the ‘too cool to care’ 90s style. Ironically nowadays achieving those air styles its actually very complicated: when it comes to beauty, to most undone look usually requires the most effort. Such is the case of messy buns. If you are persistent enough you might learn how to do it, unfortunately, I can’t teach you how. (you could try this)
Instead, you can wear statement jewelry, since that’s what we specialize in. Some big hoops are perfect for a 90s vintage outfit. After all, what's the point in wearing jewelry, if it doesn't make a statement?
Now you are ready to try some retro outfits from the 90s. I'm sure you have all the basic pieces to try most of these outfits. If you liked it, share it please!
